Within my practice, art therapy has emerged as a viable method for addressing behaviour problems in children and teens. With each passing year in my practice, I have seen firsthand how creative expression can change the lives of young individuals facing emotional and behavioural challenges. Throughout this journey I have worked alongside parents and families struggling with behaviour management for their children and teens at home, at school, with peers, and with siblings.

Understanding the Power of Art Therapy

Art therapy offers a safe space for children and teens to explore their feelings and thoughts without needing to rely solely on words. For many young people, articulating their struggles—be it anxiety, anger, or other issues—can be incredibly difficult. Engaging in creative activities allows them to express emotions that might otherwise be bottled up.

The studio itself, also offers a unique setting to explore, navigate, and correct particular behaviours. This includes but is not limited to following rules and instructions, and addressing snooping and boundary-breaking behaviours. Other behaviours that can be addressed through art therapy are dysregulated sibling communication, teen deliquincy, anger responses, and issues related to sharing, leadership, and parallel play.

Creating a Safe Environment

Building a trusting environment is pivotal for effective therapy sessions. I make it a priority to establish a non-judgmental setting where children feel secure in sharing their thoughts and behaving in a way true to their everyday self. As they create, my role is to guide them in reflecting on their artwork, which often leads to deeper discussions and in some cases acknowledge and correct behaviours in the moment.

Art pieces can serve as powerful prompts for conversations. Consider a scenario where a child creates a dark, chaotic landscape—this imagery can represent feelings of turmoil or conflict. Discussing this piece can help them articulate their experiences and provide insights into their emotional state and subsequent behavioural responses. Finding the route emotions that guide behaviour seems to be the key, at least in my practice, to behaviour management.

Encouraging Self-Discovery and Coping Skills

One of the most fulfilling aspects of art therapy is observing the development of coping skills in my clients. Through their artwork, they begin to manage their feelings and behaviours more effectively. For instance, for clients with boundary-breaking behaviours related to environment and possessions, client's can learn through the studio how to re-direct their urges in a healthy and acceptable format.

Art therapy cultivates resilience as well. Young individuals learn it is okay to face tough emotions and that creative expression can be liberating. Research shows that children who engage in regular art activities develop problem-solving skills; they learn to think critically about their emotions and actions. By the end of our sessions, they often have a toolkit of coping strategies they can carry into their daily lives.

Collaborating with Parents

I believe art therapy should extend beyond the individual sessions. Involving parents is essential for reinforcing positive behaviours at home. During my practice, I share insights from our sessions and offer strategies that parents can employ to support their children's growth.

Family art therapy can also provide opportunities for parents to connect with their children in the therapeutic process. The aim of family art therapy sessions would be to enhance understanding and create a space for dialogue. Observing the family interactions may also serve to provide additional advice and suggestions catered specifically to each family's dynamics.

Reflecting on the Transformative Journey

Through my experience in art therapy for behaviour management, I have seen the remarkable power of creative expression. Children and teens exposed to this approach not only learn to directly address their behaviour issues but also unlock new pathways for self-exploration and resilience.

Many of my clients have gained the skills to navigate their emotional landscapes, leading to healthier relationships with themselves and others. With each child or teen I work with, I am reminded of the transformative potential of art therapy, and I am endlessly passionate about promoting its benefits as a means to enrich the lives of young individuals.
